The Department of Cognitive Psychology of the University of Würzburg offers a position for a
Research Assistant / PhD Student ( 65 %; TV - L) for a period of 3 years,
starting 1.3.2019 .
The candidate will work in the DFG - funded project “ Spatial Interpretation of Pointing Gestures ”
granted to PD Dr. Oliver Herbort . The aim of the project is to determine how human observers
spatially interpret the pointing gestures of others with a series of virtual reality experiments and to
develop comput ational model of the interpretation process.
The position requires planning, programming and running behavioral experiments with a virtual
reality setup , data analyses, development of computational models, publishing results in
international journal s , and presenting at national and international conferences. The ideal
candidate has a M aster or Diplom a in P sychology , Cognitive Science s , or a relate d field. The
candidate has practical experience in experimental psychology, has or will acquire programming
skills (e.g., C#) , and is experienced in statistical data analysis (e.g., SPSS , matlab ) . Prior
experience in fields associated with the project (e.g., visual perception, gestures) or the required
methods (VR, computational modelling) would be advantageous .
The position allows to work in an excellent environment, to be part of a supportive and stimu lating
group that covers a broad range of topics and methods , and to travel to international conferences.
The candidate has the opportunity to pursue her /h is PhD. It is possible to flexibly reschedule the
start of the appointment in agreement with the candidate .
