for a project investigating Understanding Automated Vehicles (AV) Predictability Using
Neuroergonomics within the EU funded project SHAPE-IT (see ESR1 project description on
www.shape-it.eu)

Project objectives: Based on existing models and theories in cognitive psychology, the
PhD candidate will derive recommendations for driver-AV interaction strategies by
improving the understanding of cognitive mechanisms of drivers’ predictions of AV
behaviour. This understanding will be achieved by developing and using
neurophysiological measurement such as EEG, ERPs and eye-tracking in AV-driving
simulator studies. Other variables such as gender, age, and personality will be taken into
account to lead to descriptions of drivers’ information needs in complex urban trafc and
a cognitive model of dynamic task sharing between AV and driver in complex urban
trafc.

for a project investigating cooperative interaction strategies between automated vehicles
and mixed motorized urban trafc within the EU funded project SHAPE-IT (see ESR11
project description on www.shape-it.eu)

Objectives of the project: The PhD candidate will focus on investigating the interaction
between drivers in urban trafc situations. Based on the analysis of behavior in
prototypical situations the PhD student will develop, analyze and test interaction and
cooperation patterns using the state of the art driving simulators at the Department of
Human Factors. Based on these results the PhD student will formulate recommendations
for safe, efcient, and cooperative AV behavior in mixed urban trafc, resulting in a model
of human cooperation behavior in mixed urban trafc and a set of analyzed cooperation
patterns between drivers in complex urban trafc that are the basis for developing
adequate behavior strategies for AVs in mixed urban trafc.
